About me

Hi, my name is Valerio Moggia, and I am an Italian sports journalist, focused on the connection between football (or soccer, as you please) and politics.

Since 2017 I run a blog about this topics, called Pallonate in Faccia: you can find it also on social media, like Facebook, X, Threads, Instagram and Bluesky (where I write mostly in English). It is also a podcast, but exclusively in Italian language.

I wrote for well-known Italian outlets, such as Domani, Il Post, Ultimo Uomo, Rivista Undici, Il Manifesto, Facta, Valigia Blu and many others. Maybe you spotted me also on The End of Sport Podcast, and I was once interviewed by So Foot.

I also wrote some books on football and politics: Storia popolare del calcio. Uno sport di esuli, immigrati e lavoratori (A People’s History of Football: A Sport of Exiles, Immigrants, and Workers, Ultra Sport, 2020); La Coppa del Morto. Storia di un Mondiale che non dovrebbe esistere (The Cup of Death: The Story of a World Cup That Shouldn’t Exist, Ultra Sport, 2022); and Il calcio è politica. Lo sport come antidoto al nazionalismo (Football is politics. Sport as an antidote to nationalism, People, 2025).

Finally, since 2024 I have an English-language newsletter here on Substack, called The Beautiful Shame, focused on football, politics and human rights in Saudi Arabia.
